Who We Are
Friends of Residents is a North Carolina 501(c)(3) membership organization of individuals
and associations committed to improving the quality of life for over 70,000
North Carolina citizens in long term care. Our work covers many aspects
of long term care in various settings: nursing homes, assisted living facilities,
adult care homes, family care homes, multi-unit housing with services, continuing
care retirement communities and home and community services.
What We Do
Direct Assistance to Individuals
We are an independent source for families looking for long term care for their
loved ones or seeking assistance with an unresolved complaint. We receive
hundreds of requests for information and assistance each
year.
Public Policy Advocacy
Friends of Residents in Long Term Care influences public policy on behalf
of residents and personal care aides. Our Public Policy Committee
proposes legislation that will improve direct care staffing, ensure adequate
training and increase facility accountability. We monitor bills affecting
long term care and participate in the rule-making process. We work
to insure that advocates and family members are represented on boards and
commissions that make decisions affecting long term care.
Direct Care Workers
We are committed to improvements in training, fair compensation and
reasonable workloads for those who care for our loved ones.
Family Councils
We support the development of family councils within nursing homes
and assisted living residences.
Forums and Workshops
We sponsor a variety of events to help consumers and
professionals make informed decisions about long term care.
Speakers Bureau
A Speakers Bureau is available to talk to groups about long term care issues.
Please contact our office at (919) 782-1530 or 1-888-411-7571 for more
information.
Newsletter
Our newsletter reaches hundreds of individuals and organizations quarterly.
For many, this newsletter is their primary source of information about pending
long term care legislation, actions taken by the penalty review committee
and other events affecting long term care.
Watchdog
We monitor the monthly meetings of the Penalty Review Committee.
This committee, appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and
Human Services, reviews proposed sanctions against long term care facilities
and recommends penalties.
